Sadiq Khan: I do not support boycotts of Israel

In an article published last week in the Jewish News, London Mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan spoke openly about his opposition to boycotts of Israel. He told the Jewish News: “I have consistently made absolutely clear that I do not support boycotts, sanctions or divestment of Israel.”

Khan retweeted a tweet from the Jewish News clarifying his position to all of his followers on twitter. The retweet reads: “I do not support boycotts of Israel.

The retweet was later deleted after a strong response from other twitter users who disagreed with him. Khan’s support for Israel on the heels of the Conservative Party’s call to restrict councils from boycotting Israel remains unexplained.

Most Londoners like the rest of the country have championed Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) to help Palestinians gain peace and justice. The negative response on twitter is an indication of that support. This support was recently replicated when over 16,000 people signed a petition to keep publicly funded bodies free to boycott unethical companies.

A spokesperson for Khan told Jewish News the deleting of the tweet was “accidental” and has been endorsed on twitter on Monday, thus reiterating his support.
