An International Criminal Court report has found Israel guilty of the occupation of Gaza and East Jerusalem. In a ruling that helps to dispel consistent myths spread by the Israeli government, the court has clarified the position for the international community, and officially announced that Gaza is indeed under Israeli occupation. The report issued on 14th November 2016 by the Office of the Prosecutor states, that contrary to Israeli claims to deny it, the occupation of Gaza is real.
“Israel has maintained that following the 2005 disengagement, it is no longer an occupying power in Gaza. By contrast, it may be argued that Israel nonetheless remains an occupying power.” (p25, point 112)
The immoral and ongoing blockade on Gaza is approaching its 10-year mark. These 10 years have equalled an immense struggle for Palestinians in Gaza, who are denied basic rights such as access to resources, particularly water and electricity. As a consequence of a long list of other inhumane restrictions and violent bombardments from Israel, a humanitarian crisis of immense proportions has ensued.
The ICC report also concluded that the annexation of East Jerusalem equals occupation. Finally, this report is a recognition of civil society, and a reflection of what has been stated by ourselves and other organisations for quite some time. Those that have been calling for this recognition must now stand by it and consider its relevance in further campaigns to stop the occupation.
