Today, 19 November, Netanyahu announced that the village of Khan al-Ahmar will be demolished “very soon”. This draconian threat comes after Khan al-Ahmar village’s scheduled destruction last month was halted.
The Palestinians in the village now face the destruction of their homes which lie between two illegal Israeli settlements. Khan al-Ahmar is classified as part of Area C of the West Bank. Israel is illegally occupying this area and rarely grants permission for Palestinians to build homes in Area C.
The UK’s current Minister of State for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, has stated that the relocation of Khan al-Ahmar’s population might be taken by the UN as an act constituting the forcible transfer of people. However, these words from British ministers have not resulted in any meaningful action in the past and Netanyahu is likely to press ahead, making more than 170 Palestinians refugees.
