UN: Settlements Are Crushing Hopes For A Viable Palestine

January 25, 2019 /

Israel’s illegal occupation has become more entrenched in the last year according to statements from the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov.

Mladenov warned against the continued attempts to completely annex Palestinian territory in the West Bank. Israel’s Economy Minister, Eli Cohen, has recently publicly argued for this kind of annexation in the West Bank.

The Special Coordinator also warned that the ‘possibility of establishing a viable, contiguous Palestinian State has been systematically eroded’ by the expansion of Israel’s settlements. Israel has proposed nearly 2200 new illegal settlements on occupied territory.

Israel’s settlements have taken an increasingly large amount of the West Bank and violate the Fourth Geneva Convention. They are in clear violation of the Geneva Convention by transferring members of the Israeli population into the occupied territory. This is specifically defined as a war crime.

The construction of new settlements appears to have accelerated over the last few years. In 2018 Israel constructed the largest number of new illegal settlements to date.
