Hamdi Naasan a 38 year old Palestinian was killed on Saturday in an attack by Israeli settlers in the West Bank village of al-Mugheir. The rampage by the armed Israeli settlers led to the murder of Naasan who was shot in the back and the wounding of thirty other Palestinians.
Ataf Naasan, a cousin of the murdered victim described the settlers as “firing randomly” with the intent of killing. Israeli military forces reportedly were stationed within visual distance and witnessed the attack but did not attempt to intervene.
Ataf Naasan further stated the Israeli forces only intervened after the attack was over by firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the Palestinians. Hamdi Nassan is the fourth Palestinian to be killed in the space of only two days – the youngest of which was 18 years old.
The United Nation’s Middle East envoy, Nikolay Mladenov, called for the government of Israel to oppose settler violence and deliver justice for the victims of attacks by illegal Israeli settlers. In a statement on social media Mladenov described the attack as “shocking and unacceptable” and condemned the “terror”.
The case raises how the continued killings of Palestinians by settlers has been ‘institutionalised’ with the failure of Palestinians to get legal redress. The fifty-two year Israeli occupation is the longest in modern history and is illegal under international law.
