FOA condemns Islamophobic remarks from Samuel Hayek of the Jewish National Fund

December 23, 2021 /

FOA is outraged by the divisive and Islamophobic remarks made by Samuel Hayek of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) earlier this week. Speaking to Jewish News, Hayek claimed that Muslim immigration to Britain will leave Jews with “no future in England”. FOA condemns this racist comment but is not surprised: the JNF has long been criticised as a pillar of Israel’s racist policies.

Hayek’s remark follows similar comments in an interview with Jerusalem Post earlier this month. Hayek commented that ‘“Jews do not have a future in England’ and the Post article claimed that ‘the population of individuals who are anti-Jewish and anti-Israel’ in Britain are ‘most significantly Muslim immigrants to the UK’. This conflation of criticism of Israel with antisemitism and targeting of Muslim immigrants to the UK is hugely concerning. It represents the ongoing attempt to shut down legitimate criticism of Israel’s human rights abuses by branding such criticism anti-Semitic.

The JNF has long been criticised as a pillar of Israel’s racist policies against Palestinians. The organisation raises money for the ongoing displacement of Palestinians from their land and the construction of Israeli settlements which are illegal under international law.

FOA condemns racism in all its forms, from Islamophobia to antisemitism, and will continue to seek freedom, justice and equality for Palestine.
