Jerusalem

Since 1967 Israel has illegally occupied East Jerusalem. This means Palestinians in East Jerusalem live under Israeli control.

  • Palestinians in East Jerusalem are forcibly removed from their homes and their houses are destroyed by Israel.

  • Since 2004 Israel has made over 3000 Palestinians homeless in East Jerusalem, including 1000 children.

  • Israel routinely restricts Christian and Muslim access to holy sites in Jerusalem.

A deeper dive.

Israel has illegally occupied and annexed East Jerusalem, in violation of international law.

Since 1948 Israel has violently displaced and murdered Palestinians in East Jerusalem, simply for being Palestinian.

Palestinians in East Jerusalem face building restrictions, forced expulsions and discrimination in budget allocation for local infrastructure and services. There are shortages in the sewage lines and water connections, as well as in schools and social services. Palestinians also face restricted access to holy sites including Al-Aqsa mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

For decades, Israel has taken more and more land in East Jerusalem to make way for illegal Israeli settlements. There are now around 200,000 Israeli settlers living in illegal settlements in East Jerusalem, lured in by tax and housing incentives from the Israeli government. Since 2004 1000 Palestinian children have been made homeless by Israel in East Jerusalem.

Over 1500 Palestinians face unlawful home demolitions in the al-Bustan area of Silwan in East Jerusalem. Israel plans to build another 6000 illegal Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem in the coming years.
