The Palestinian people: erased from World Health Statistics 2022
The annual publication of the World Health Organisation (WHO) World Health Statistics report has always included the Palestinians but their exclusion of Palestinians from the 2022 report raises questions for their omission. It is unacceptable to erase the existence of over 5 million people from its detailed assessment of world health.
According to Save the Children, 80% of children in Gaza are suffering from depression. The Lancet in 2021 reported on an acute-on-chronic health crisis in Gaza. Even you, as the WHO in 2021, made an urgent appeal because of the Health Crisis in OPT – Occupied Palestinian Territories. The health figures of the Palestinians are getting worse, particularly in Gaza and West Bank. The health crisis amongst Palestinians is directly related to the brutal Israeli policies and siege.
The absence from the WHO report has thus been described by Richard Horton as ‘nothing less than statistical genocide – the deliberate elimination of a people with the aim of extinguishing their existence.’
It is implausible that WHO would erase Palestinians from such a comprehensive report when WHO Director General ‘explicitly links movement restrictions, demolitions, displacements, and the use of excessive force against Palestinians as social determinants of health‘.
The exclusion supports the erasure and genocide of the Palestinians. It also takes away the opportunity to present the negative and harmful impact the Israeli occupation has on Palestinian peoples health.
WHO must rectify its erasure of the Palestinian people from the annual document immediately. It must also ensure the inclusion of the oPt in future reports of global health. Write to the WHO General Director now using the action tab above.
