The Nakba, now in its 77th year, continues to represent the violent expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, the theft of their land, and the erasure of their existence. It is part of a broader strategy to fragment Palestine, including the siege of Gaza, which starves an entire population, and a genocidal campaign in Gaza that has claimed over 60,000 lives. The ongoing Nakba also poses an urgent threat to Masjid Al-Aqsa.
In a powerful show of solidarity, hundreds of UK Ulama (Islamic scholars) from over 30 towns and cities took a coordinated and leading role by joining the Nakba protest in London on 17th May 2025. Their collective presence marks a significant moment for the Palestinian movement and the defence of Masjid Al-Aqsa.
As the spiritual leaders and moral guides of the Muslim community, the Ulama's participation affirmed that the cause of Palestine is not merely a political issue but a deeply rooted Islamic responsibility. Their involvement sent a clear message: activism must go hand in hand with dua (supplication) in the struggle for Palestinian liberation.
Their action also revived a proud tradition in Muslim history, just as Ulama once stood beside Salahudeen in the battle to liberate Jerusalem, when figures like Imam Al-Ghazali educated the masses, Shaykh Qutb al-Din Al-Nishapuri offered personal counsel, and Shaykh Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudama rode into battle. The Ulama today have once again stepped forward to galvanise the Ummah.
“We pray that the leadership shown by UK Ulama is recognised and emulated across the world,” said Ismail Patel, Chair of Friends of Al-Aqsa. “Their presence empowered the Muslim community, affirming that participation in such protests is both an Islamic duty and a means of attaining reward from Allah [SWT].” He added, “The UK Ulama have taken a bold step in proving that Muslims can engage in political activism alongside allies, while staying true to Islamic principles.”
The unity displayed by scholars from diverse schools of thought also highlights the importance of collective action for the cause of Palestine. Their example calls upon us all to get involved in political activism and stand together in justice and solidarity.
