War crimes

A war crime is a violation of international humanitarian law. Israel has a long history of war crimes, including:

  • In the Nakba (catastrophe) of 1948 Israel committed over 70 massacres.

  • More recently Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza in 2008-2009, 2012, 2014 and 2021.

  • In May 2021 Israel targeted Palestinian civilians in Gaza, destroying 152 residential buildings and killing 67 children.

A deeper dive.

A war crime is a violation of one of the laws of war. These laws were introduced after the atrocities of World War Two. War crimes include the deliberate and unprovoked destruction of communities, devastation beyond military necessity and the ill-treatment, torture or murder of civilians living under occupation.

War crimes are among the gravest crimes in international law. They are so serious that there is no time limit for when someone can be punished for committing them. Since 1948 Israel has committed numerous war crimes. The United Nations has condemned Israel, but Israel continues to act with impunity

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have called for an investigation into Israel’s ongoing war crimes in Gaza. In May 2021 Israel murdered 256 Palestinians in Gaza, including 66 children. Israel targeted two residential buildings of the Abu al-Ouf and al-Kolaq families in Gaza, killing 30 family members including 11 children

Israel also commits war crimes in the illegally occupied West Bank. Israel’s use of collective punishment against Palestinians in the form of checkpoints, home demolitions, curfews and military incursions constitutes war crimes.

For more than seven decades, Israel has ignored, denied and remained unapologetic about the war crimes it continues to inflict on Palestinians. We must hold Israel accountable.
